Builders Declare has been inspired by Australian architects who have united under the banner of Australian Architects Declare and are striving for urgent action to address our climate and biodiversity emergencies. In a world first, Australian builders now join architects in publicly acknowledging that we are in a climate emergency, and that business as usual cannot continue if we want a prosperous future for our children and natural environment.

The Green Building Institute and DSGNK are actively supporting this group of builders who are sending out a call to arms amongst construction industry professionals to take a stand on climate change and our biodiversity emergency. We understand, the time is now for professionals in the construction industry to take a stand on climate change or get left behind.

The twin crises of climate breakdown and biodiversity loss are the most serious issue of our generation. Globally, buildings and construction play a major role in our planet's degradation, accounting for nearly 40% of (CO2) emissions, while also having a major impact on resource depletion, pollution levels, and the damage of our natural environments. Additionally, most Australian homes are well below first world standards globally, and consume far too much energy to heat and cool. It’s time we were much more considerate of our construction practices and lifted our standards.

For everyone working in the construction industry, meeting the needs of our society going forward, without breaching the earth’s ecological boundaries, will demand a paradigm shift in our behaviour, and our buildings. As an industry we need to design and build our cities and infrastructure of a superior quality and performance, to meet the challenges of a low carbon future, whilst prioritising materials with minimal environmental impact more broadly.

Like-minded builders and professional tradespeople can sign-up here for free to support the mission.

Since its launch, Builders Declare and the Green Building Institute have already received a huge response from the Australian construction industry. They also started to run educational events, providing resources to establish a nationwide network of construction professionals that are passionate about building more sustainably, creating a better future for all Australians.

"Yes, it's an emergency, but the good news is that we as an industry can do something about it. This a positive message to inspire change and we are inviting other builders and contractors to join us"
